A good education is one of the most important gifts that you can give to your children.

With degree level education now considered the bare minimum by many employers, going to a good university is more important than ever.

Education Fee Planning

It’s easy to forget about planning for your child’s further education as it seems so far away, however with university costs increasing year on year, saving early is the only realistic option for many.

With expat parents, it is unlikely that your children will qualify for ‘Home Status’ in the country which they choose to study. Instead, they will have to pay international student rates and are unlikely to receive student support loans/grants.

Home status

On the first day of the first academic year of the course, to qualify as a home student, all of the following criteria must be fulfilled by the student:

  • Be free from any immigration restrictions
  • Be ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom
  • Have been ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and/or Isle of Man for the whole period of the three years directly preceding the first day of the academic course
  • The main purpose for the three years’ residence in the UK and Islands must not have been to receive full-time education during any part of it, unless the student is a European Union citizen (but not a British citizen) and immediately prior to the three-year period was ordinarily resident in the European Economic Area, Switzerland or qualifying overseas territories.

In the UK, annual university fees for a home student are currently £9,250. For an international student, annual fees range between £10,000-£35,000 depending on the university and the course. It is impossible to tell what your children will choose to study at university when they are young, but it is very easy to see that it will be expensive regardless. When living costs and the effect of inflation are considered, it is impossible to ignore the size of the expense.
